Region III Representative


Leandra Williams, Region III Representative joins the board with a history of experience serving both her local affiliate (Illinois Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf - IRID) and RID. She served as a member of the IRID Legislative Committee, Chair of the IRID Bylaws Committee, IRID Conference Committee Chairperson, IRID Board Director and Vice President. Within RID, she has served on the Motions Committee, RID/ITOC Secretary and Vice Chair, NAD/RID National Council on Interpreting (NCI) and 2003 RID Conference Co-chair. In addition, Ms. Williams is Past President of the National Alliance of Black Interpreters, Inc. (NAOBI, Inc.) and has also served that organization in a variety of positions both on a national level and with the state affi liate. She holds memberships in various consumer based organizations such as: the National Black Deaf Advocates (NBDA - where she served as Assistant Conference Interpreter Coordinator and Mentorship Program Coordinator); and National Association of the Deaf (NAD). Ms. Williams has also served on a variety of advisory boards which address the interests of both sign language interpreters and members of the Deaf community. Ms. Williams currently works in private practice as a Sign Language Interpreter in Post Secondary Educational Settings, community environments and Video Relay Services. She is also an adjunct faculty member in the ASL/English Interpretation Department at Columbia College (Chicago). Presently she is collecting research for a book on the history of African Americans/Blacks in the fi eld of sign language interpretation.
